Summary:  Plans, directs, and implements "world class" safety culture and ensures compliance with all state, federal and local governmental EHS regulations by performing the following duties:  The scope of the role includes direct responsibility for the Rocky Mount Site as well as oversight of all the sites within the Trinity division of ProAmpac.

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Knows and follows all safety policies and procedures. Ensures co-workers are also following safety rules across all ProAmpac facilities.
  • Commitment, awareness and involvement pertaining to ISO (policy, standards, procedures, etc.) and food safety practices (GMPs, procedures, etc.) are requirements of all employees.
  • Plans and implements safety and environmental policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations. This includes written programs, recordkeeping, reports, inspections, monitoring, testing, and training.  Employee also remains current in changing EHS regulations.
  • Directs, develops and delivers safety, health and environmental training programs to ensure employees' knowledge, understanding and adherence to safety and environmental regulations pertaining to all ProAmpac facilities.
  • Works closely with third party vendor to limit risk exposure at all facilities and ensure all recommendations are completed and documented.
  • Plans and implements programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, including but not limited to fire prevention, correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials, blood borne pathogens, forklift, hazardous communication, lockout/tagout and emergency action plans.
  • Coordinates and leads site safety committee to inspect organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
  • Provides information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
  • Manages and completes monthly environmental recordkeeping and inspections as needed to assure compliance with applicable permits, regulations, and requirements.
  • Manages EHS programs, including cost control/reduction and accident prevention/reduction, safety behavior audit and risk assessment programs. Assists in managing workers compensation cases to ensure reasonable return to work and cost containment.
  • Coordinates safety and ERT committees and required meetings/trainings.
  • Conducts safety orientation of new hires, contractors and visitors which includes PIV certification if necessary.
  • Analyzes safety history to identify unsafe trends/behaviors and uses information to develop safety strategies.
  • Files annual local, state and federal environmental reports potentially including air, waste, water, Tier II, and Form R.
  • Manages hazardous waste disposal program.
  • Demonstrates appropriate attitude in all dealings with coworkers, customers, and suppliers.
  • Read, understand and follow work instructions
  • Follow quality requirements to meet or exceed specifications
  • Effectively communicate with employees from your own and other departments to ensure a team environment.
  • Conduct inspections and audits to ensure compliance to the ProAmpac S.H.E. standards
  • Coordinate development of an EHS improvement strategic plan for the business and sites through collaboration with the site managers.
  • Must be able to travel to the other Trinity division sites as needed - up to 10% travel
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • Coordinate visits from internal and external regulatory authorities.
  • Analyze manufacturing processes, evaluating production machinery and or chemical exposures to determine safety hazards and alternative solutions.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities  

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Indirectly coordinates EHS programs at each of the other Trinity division sites by working with site leaders and designated EHS personnel at those sites.

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • BS degree in Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety, or other science field.
  • Five or more years' experience leading EHS.
  • Experience in evaluating/interpreting OSHA, EPA and DOT regulations and NFPA, ANSI, ASTM, and ASME standards preferred.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety Professional (ASP/CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certifications are a plus

Work Environment

Work primarily in a climate controlled indoor environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. Hearing protection, safety shoes and vision protection required.
